How to Clean Crystals Safely: A Mineral-by-Mineral Guide
A crystal arrives carrying the dust of its own small history.
Maybe it came from a pocket deep inside limestone, maybe it was lifted from red earth, wrapped in paper at a mineral show, held up to twelve different windows before it found yours. And eventually, because homes contain fingerprints and candle smoke and cats who believe every shelf belongs to them, it will need to be cleaned.
This is where good intentions can become a tiny geological disaster.
Water is gentle to us. Vinegar lives beside the dish soap. A toothbrush seems harmless. But minerals have different hardnesses, different cleavage planes, different relationships with moisture and acid and pressure. The safest way to clean a crystal begins before the water runs.
It begins with knowing what the stone is.
The First Rule of Crystal Care: Identify Before You Clean
The Mohs scale measures resistance to scratching. Gypsum sits at 2, calcite at 3, fluorite at 4, and quartz at 7. Those numbers are useful, but hardness tells only one part of the story.
A hard mineral can still fracture. A soft mineral can survive for centuries if it is handled gently. Crystal clusters may have narrow attachment points, natural fissures, coatings, inclusions, or matrix material that reacts differently than the main crystal.
Before cleaning, ask:
- Is the specimen polished or raw?
- Is it a single mineral or several minerals growing together?
- Does it have delicate points, flaky layers, or open fractures?
- Is the mineral sensitive to water, acids, heat, or sunlight?
- Is it dyed, coated, glued, stabilized, or otherwise treated?
If you do not know, stay dry. A little dust is kinder than an irreversible experiment.
The Safest Place to Begin
For most display specimens, the quietest method is the best method.
Place the crystal on a folded towel so it cannot roll. Remove loose dust with a clean camera blower, a very soft artist’s brush, or a dry microfiber cloth on broad polished surfaces. Support clusters from beneath instead of holding them by a point. Brush outward, following the crystal’s structure, and stop if grains or flakes begin to move.
Skip canned compressed air, which can be forceful and may release cold propellant. Skip stiff brushes, scouring powders, bleach, vinegar, lemon juice, oils, steam cleaners, and ultrasonic machines unless a qualified mineral conservator has confirmed that they are appropriate for that exact specimen.
The goal is not to make a stone look newly manufactured. It has been busy becoming itself for a very long time.
How to Clean Satin Spar and “Selenite”
The silky white material commonly sold as selenite spheres, towers, and wands is usually satin spar, a fibrous variety of gypsum. True selenite is the clear, plate-like crystalline form of the same mineral species.
Gypsum is very soft, ranking 2 on the Mohs scale, and it is soluble in water. A quick accidental splash will not make a sphere vanish into the sink, but soaking and repeated wet cleaning can dull its polish, roughen the fibers, and soften sharp details.
Keep satin spar dry. Dust it with a soft brush or wipe a polished sphere gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Never scrub across exposed fibers. Avoid oils because they can settle into the fibrous surface and collect dust.

How to Clean Calcite Clusters
Calcite grows in an astonishing range of forms, from rhombohedrons to sharp scalenohedral “dogteeth,” and every edge seems to have negotiated directly with light.
It also asks for gentleness.
Calcite ranks 3 on the Mohs scale, has strong cleavage, and reacts with acids. That means vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, acidic sprays, and many household descalers can etch the surface. Even a polished piece may lose its shine.

For a raw cluster such as our Honey & Smoke Dogtooth Calcite, use a soft dry brush and work slowly around the points. Do not soak it. For a sturdy polished calcite piece with no fractures or coatings, a barely damp cloth may be used for a small mark, followed immediately by a dry cloth, but dry care is still the safest starting point.
Never lift a cluster by its tallest tooth. That is how a crystal becomes two crystals, which is technically more crystals but probably not the outcome you wanted.
What About Fluorite, Quartz, and Polished Stones?
Fluorite is harder than calcite, but it has perfect cleavage and can chip from impact or sudden temperature changes. Dust raw fluorite gently. For a solid polished piece, use a soft cloth that is dry or only lightly damp, then dry it promptly. Avoid hot water, steam, ultrasonic cleaning, and long soaking.
Quartz is harder at Mohs 7, so an intact, untreated polished quartz can usually be washed briefly with lukewarm water and mild soap. Still, examine it first. Fractures, delicate coatings, mineral inclusions, glued repairs, and attached matrix can change the answer completely.
Polished obsidian is volcanic glass rather than a crystal. It can be wiped with a soft damp cloth, but its edges may chip and broken surfaces can become extremely sharp. Hardness never means invincibility. The stone knows the difference.
Display Is Part of Crystal Care
Cleaning becomes easier when dust never settles deeply.
Use a closed cabinet for delicate clusters, keep soft stones away from harder pieces that can scratch them, and give spheres secure stands on low, stable shelves. Do not crowd points together. Save labels with locality and mineral information because a specimen’s story is part of its value.
Light matters too. Some minerals can fade or alter after long exposure. Rose quartz is among the materials conservators treat cautiously, so bright display is lovely, while years of direct window light are less lovely. Rotate sensitive pieces, filter ultraviolet light, or move them away from the sunniest glass.
And every few months, look closely. A changing surface, new powder, spreading crack, strange odor, or loose crystal deserves attention before cleaning.
A Five-Question Crystal Care Check
- Do I know the mineral?
- Do I know whether it is treated or attached to another material?
- Is it soft, soluble, acid-sensitive, or strongly cleaved?
- Can dry dusting solve the problem?
- Would I be sad if this cleaning method changed the surface forever?
That final question is surprisingly useful.
Minerals move at a different pace than we do. They do not need to be scrubbed into perfection. Most of the time they need a careful hand, a little patience, and a clean place to keep catching the light.
