Is Obsidian a Crystal? How Volcanic Glass Makes Rainbows, Gold, and Silve
At first, obsidian keeps the room to itself.
Black, glossy, quiet. Then a lamp moves, the stone turns, and a band of gold rises through it like smoke remembering the sun. Another piece answers in silver. A rainbow waits at a steeper angle, green becoming violet becoming blue, all of it hidden inside what looked like darkness a moment before.
It is easy to call this a crystal. Crystal shops do, collectors do, and ordinary language has made room for the word. Geologically, though, obsidian is something stranger.
Is Obsidian a Crystal?
Obsidian is natural volcanic glass. It forms from silica-rich molten rock that cools so quickly that its atoms do not have enough time to arrange themselves into the repeating structure of a crystal.
Quartz builds an orderly lattice. Obsidian freezes before that architecture can be completed.
Mineralogists describe it as an amorphous solid, and collectors often place it among the mineraloids, natural materials that resemble minerals but do not meet every part of the formal definition. Calling an obsidian palm stone a “crystal” in the broad shop sense is common, but the accurate geological answer is no: obsidian is glass born from a volcano.
That glassy structure is also why broken obsidian forms curved, shell-like surfaces called conchoidal fractures. Fresh edges can be extremely sharp. The polish may feel soft in your hand, but the material remembers how to become a blade.
Why Does Obsidian Look Black?
Most obsidian is not perfectly opaque. Hold a thin edge against a strong light and it may glow smoky brown, gray, or greenish.
Its dark appearance comes from the way light moves through the glass and interacts with tiny mineral particles, iron-bearing components, microscopic bubbles, and internal structures. Thickness matters too. A thin shard may transmit light while a thick palm stone appears nearly black.
Then there are the obsidians that keep another layer of weather inside them: gold sheen, silver sheen, and rainbow.

Gold, Silver, and Rainbow Obsidian
These names describe optical varieties of obsidian, not separate mineral species. Their sheen is internal, and it depends on microscopic features formed while the molten glass was flowing and cooling.
Scientific work on Mexican sheen obsidian found aligned, stretched microscopic areas with slightly different refractive properties from the surrounding glass. Those tiny boundaries can interfere with light and create a luminous sheet of reflection. Studies of rainbow material have also identified aligned microscopic mineral rods, with thin-film interference producing color.
The exact microscopic recipe can vary between deposits. Nature rarely agrees to make every rainbow by one method.
Gold Sheen Obsidian

Silver Sheen Obsidian

Rainbow Obsidian
Rainbow obsidian can reveal green, violet, blue, gold, or several colors in nested bands. It is often the shyest of the three. Broad room light may show almost nothing, while a flashlight, phone light, or direct sun finds the color immediately.

Why Polishing Matters
A lapidary does not add the sheen, but the cut decides whether we can see it.
Obsidian must be oriented so the polished surface crosses its reflective layers at a useful angle. A beautiful piece of rough can hide its strongest color in the wrong direction. Shaping and polishing remove material gradually, replacing a scratched surface with a smooth one that allows light to enter and return with less scattering.
This is why two palm stones from the same source may perform very differently. One gives its gold away immediately. Another makes you search.
How to Choose Sheen Obsidian
Look at more than a still photograph.
Ask for video when possible, because movement is part of the specimen. Notice whether the sheen covers a broad area or appears in smaller bands, whether it stays visible through several angles, and whether you enjoy the stone in ordinary light as well as under a flashlight.
A strong optical effect is lovely, but it is not the only kind of beauty. Some pieces have softer clouds, subtle rings, natural flow lines, or tiny variations that feel like volcanic handwriting.
Caring for Obsidian
Obsidian is softer than quartz and can scratch when stored against harder minerals. Keep polished pieces separated, dust them with a soft cloth, and wash them only when needed with lukewarm water and mild soap.
Handle chipped rough carefully. Conchoidal fractures can create edges far sharper than their dark glassy surface suggests. Avoid drops, sudden temperature changes, abrasive cleaners, and ultrasonic machines.
The Meanings We Carry Beside It
In modern crystal traditions, black obsidian is often associated with protection and truth, while gold, silver, and rainbow varieties are given their own symbolic stories. These are cultural and personal beliefs, not proven medical effects.
The geology already gives us enough wonder.
