Selenite vs. Satin Spar: The Crystal Name Almost Everyone Mixes Up
Some mineral names arrive neat and orderly, labeled like drawers in a museum.
Selenite did not get that memo.
Walk through a crystal shop and you will see white towers, peach bowls, wands, moons, and glowing little plates all called selenite. The name is so familiar that it feels settled. Mineralogically, though, most of those silky carved pieces are satin spar, a fibrous variety of gypsum. True selenite is usually clearer, more glasslike, and grows as distinct crystals or broad transparent sheets.
The good news is that no one has to throw away a beloved moon carving because its name got tangled. Selenite and satin spar are close mineral sisters. Learning the difference simply lets us see their beauty more clearly.
What is the difference between selenite and satin spar?
The short answer: both are varieties of gypsum, with the same basic chemical composition, calcium sulfate dihydrate, written CaSO₄·2H₂O. Their difference is how the crystals grow.
Selenite forms distinct, often transparent or nearly transparent crystals. It may appear as flat blades, clear sheets, or well-defined crystal forms. Satin spar is made of masses of fine, parallel gypsum fibers. Those fibers scatter and carry light, creating the soft, silky sheen that makes carved pieces seem lit from inside.
The U.S. Geological Survey’s description of gypsum varieties makes the distinction plainly: selenite occurs as colorless transparent crystals, while satin spar is composed of needlelike crystals and usually displays a silky luster. The National Park Service also identifies selenite and satin spar as different forms of gypsum.
Same mineral. Different architecture.
Why is satin spar sold as selenite?
Because common language does what common language does. It wanders off, makes friends, and refuses to come back when the mineralogists call.
For decades, “selenite” has become the retail name many shoppers recognize for pale, luminous gypsum carvings. Search behavior reinforced it, product labels repeated it, and eventually the trade term became more familiar than “satin spar.” This does not mean the material is fake. It means the name being used is broader than the strict mineralogical definition.
A useful seller should be able to say both things at once: this is genuine gypsum, and the fibrous material is more precisely called satin spar gypsum.

How can you identify satin spar at home?
You can usually identify it by sight without scratching or damaging anything.
Look for parallel fibers
Turn the piece in your hand. Satin spar often shows long, straight, closely packed bands running in one direction. On a carved moon or bowl, the lines may curve with the surface, but the underlying parallel structure is still visible.
Move it beneath a light
A bright band may glide across the surface as you tilt it. This cat’s-eye-like effect comes from light traveling and scattering along the aligned fibers. It is one reason satin spar feels almost lunar, as though it keeps a narrow road of moonlight beneath its skin.
Notice the translucency
White satin spar is translucent to opaque rather than window-clear. Light enters, softens, and returns as a glow. Peach satin spar behaves similarly, but iron-bearing impurities or other natural coloring agents tint the gypsum warm cream, apricot, or rust.
True selenite is more likely to look glassy and transparent, with defined crystal faces or sheetlike cleavage. There are exceptions and imperfect specimens, so visual identification is a guide, not a laboratory certificate.
Is peach selenite really satin spar?
Most peach-colored carved material sold as “peach selenite” is satin spar gypsum. Its fibrous texture gives it away.
The color does not make it a different mineral species. It reflects impurities and mineral staining within the gypsum. Is satin spar fragile?
Yes. All gypsum is very soft, around 1.5 to 2 on the Mohs hardness scale. A fingernail can scratch it, edges can bruise or flake, and the fibers may split if a piece is dropped.
Keep gypsum separate from harder minerals such as quartz, which can scratch it easily. Do not stack carved pieces where they can grind against each other. Dust with a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth, and avoid soaking. Gypsum is slightly soluble in water, and repeated wet cleaning can dull a polished surface or loosen fragile fibers.
A little softness is part of the mineral’s nature. This is stone, yes, but stone that remembers water.
Can selenite or satin spar “cleanse” other crystals?
There is no scientific evidence that gypsum removes energy, cures illness, or changes the physical properties of other minerals.
Some spiritual and cultural practices use pale gypsum as a symbol of clarity, moonlight, purification, or a fresh beginning. Those are personal or traditional meanings, and they can be beautiful when presented as such. A satin spar bowl may hold jewelry, keepsakes, or small stones as part of a home ritual, but its scientifically observable gifts are its softness, fibrous growth, and remarkable relationship with light.
Which one should a collector choose?
Choose selenite if you love transparent crystal blades, sharp mineral form, and specimens that reveal gypsum’s cleavage and clarity. Choose satin spar if you love luminous carvings, silky fibers, chatoyant light, and forms shaped for display.
For a collection that tells a fuller geological story, choose both. Place them side by side and the lesson becomes visible: chemistry is only part of a mineral’s identity. Growth habit matters. Structure matters. Light notices everything.
